http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_vasectomy_pain_syndrome - the Wikipedia entry for PVPS, while brief, does list many references.

http://www.dadsagain.com/ - a site advertising the services of Dr. Sheldon Marks and Dr. Peter Burrows for Vasectomy reversals. I include it here as they have done many reversals for pain. (not only for men seeking to regain fertility) They have an informational site to describe post-vasectomy pain issues at: http://www.post-vasectomy-pain.com/

http://postvasectomypain.com/ - a site written for an urologist (Dr. Neil Pollock) who performs vasectomies as well as vasectomy reversals - for Canadians, but still helpful

To its webmaster’s credit, www.vasectomy-information.com is comprehensive and lists the most common risks and the less common risk of post-vasectomy pain syndrome. Few other sites can match the detail and medical references of this website.

Here is the main problem with post-vasectomy pain. Its incidence for a given man cannot be predicted before the procedure and the consequences can be catastrophic.

A rare outcome? It depends on what you read. The real question is, "Do you feel lucky?" Could you end up in the 5 to 10% of post-vasectomy patients with chronic pain that affects quality of life? The phenomena is truly a "Black Swan". Rare enough to be written off as unlikely. If it is 5%, then 25,000 new sufferers are created each year in the U.S. alone. Now you know about the "Black Swan", (rare, unpredictable event with significant impact) so you can make an informed decision about risking chronic genital pain and affecting your sexual function. Over 70% of men are satisfied with their vasectomy. (Some studies list over 90% satisfaction rates.) Clearly, those that develop chronic pain are not. At least having read this site, you won't feel foolish if you are in the group affected by chronic post-vasectomy testicular or scrotal pain.
